Life Sciences Consulting — Zürich, Switzerland

From innovation to market.
Turning science into
regulated products.

Every regulated product needs a pathway, the evidence behind it, and proof that both hold up. Since 2007 I've been accountable for all three — from first feasibility data to FDA and EU market authorization.

Why UC

Direct access to experience.

The senior does the work

The person you meet is the person who delivers. No junior leverage, no handovers, no re-briefing — and a cost structure to match.

Accountable across the lifecycle

What you hire is judgement formed inside the roles — so you get what compliance requires and what your team can realistically deliver. Most stalled projects are a translation problem before they are a technical one.

Days to start, not months

No proposal theatre, no 100-page decks. A clear read of the situation, a plan sized to the decision, and work that starts this week.

Who I work with

Three situations where you'd call me.

Start-ups & scale-ups

Building the first foundations

First quality system, first technical file, first submission. I set up what a notified body or the FDA expects to see — right-sized for a small team, not copied from a corporation. Design reviews go faster with a qualified independent reviewer — someone who has seen what a notified body asks for, so a small team gets to compliant without the detours.

Established manufacturers

Capacity and leadership on demand

Interim leadership for Q&RA, R&D or Clinical, MDR remediation, or an extra senior pair of hands when a submission or audit peak hits.

Investors & boards

Judgment before and after the cheque

Technical, clinical and IP due diligence on targets and portfolios — regulatory risk, remediation cost and time-to-market, assessed by someone who has carried them. Afterwards, an independent reviewer inside the project: design reviews and stage gates, reported to you.

How I work

Strategize. Implement. Assure.

Every project plan marks its milestones with a ◆. Getting a regulated product to market is a chain of them — and at three of those milestones, you can hand me the hat. Mandates can start at any stage; most clients move through all three in order.

Where I assure, I don't implement — not on the same project. Distance from the work is what makes a review objective.
Having built under the same constraints, that view stays pragmatic: what compliance requires, and what a team can actually resource.

Strategize

Decide what you build, which pathway it takes, and whether your case holds up.

  • A pathway you can defend to a notified body or the FDA
  • A classification decision that holds up later
  • A business case with the regulatory cost in it
  • A funding application that survives technical review
Business
  • Regulatory and business strategy
  • Innovation assessment and business case
  • Portfolio prioritization, NPV input
  • Funding and grant support
Regulatory
  • Product classification and regulatory pathway
  • Pre-submission strategy, FDA Q-Sub
  • Standards and gap analysis
  • Target product profile and claims strategy

Implement

Turn that direction into the evidence, documentation and supply base your market authorization requires.

  • A technical file that goes in complete
  • Clinical evidence that answers the questions asked of it
  • A supply base that holds up under audit
  • One person accountable across R&D, clinical and regulatory
R&D & industrialization
  • Design control and design history file
  • Risk management (ISO 14971)
  • Process validation and scale-up
  • Supplier selection and process build-up
Documentation & submissions
  • Technical documentation and tech files
  • CTD Module 3 (Quality) — CMC and pharmaceutical development, OTC
  • Product Information Files, cosmetics, with claim substantiation
  • FDA 510(k), De Novo, HDE, Breakthrough
  • EU MDR submissions and Notified Body dialogue
  • EMA-coordinated expert panel procedures (CECP)
Clinical
  • Clinical strategy and study design
  • CRO and CRA management (ICH-GCP, ISO 14155)
  • Biological evaluation (ISO 10993)
  • Clinical evaluation reports
  • KOL engagement, advisory boards and scientific communication

Assure & Improve

Judge what you already have against the standard it has to meet — then close the gaps.

  • A clear view of what is missing, and what it will take
  • An independent read on whether development is on track — not just at the end
  • Certification readiness rather than certification surprises
  • A post-market system that keeps the certificate valid
Independent review
  • Independent reviewer on the development project — not involved in the work being judged
  • Design reviews and stage gates: is this ready to pass to the next phase?
  • Continuous read for investors and boards, rather than a single verdict
  • Conformance checked against the plan while there is still time to correct it
Due diligence
  • Technical, clinical and IP due diligence
  • Assessment for investors, acquirers and boards
  • Regulatory risk and remediation roadmap
Audits & QMS
  • Certified Lead Auditor (ISO 9001, ISO 13485)
  • Internal, supplier and MDSAP audits
  • QMS implementation, certification and maintenance (ISO 13485, 21 CFR 820)
  • CAPA and audit readiness
Post-market & optimization
  • Post-market surveillance and PMCF
  • Vigilance and reporting
  • Clinical evaluation updates
  • Process, supplier and outsourcing optimization

And the person running them

Leadership isn't a phase — it runs underneath all three. Mandates often mean stepping in to hold the function itself, not just advise on it.

  • Interim leadership of Q&RA, R&D and Clinical functions
  • Team and department build-up, board-level reporting
  • Change management and cross-functional alignment
  • Strategic short- and mid-term planning, budget control

The four disciplines these draw on

Business & due diligence

  • Global R&D budget and portfolio responsibility — management team member, board reporting
  • Innovation and acquisition assessment — feasibility, IP position, regulatory exposure
  • Independent review of development projects — design reviews and stage gates, a continuous read for investors rather than a single verdict
  • Industrialization coach for a national innovation agency

Quality & regulatory

  • QMS built out and taken through certification — quality plan, gap analysis against ISO 13485, EU MDR and 21 CFR 820, eQMS implementation, with personal accountability as management representative
  • Dossiers for FDA and EU notified bodies — device, medicinal, cosmetic and food documentation
  • Certified lead auditor — internal and supplier audits, both sides of the table

R&D & industrialization

  • Class III new product development — ideation to launch, design control and risk management file
  • Process validation, scale-up, supplier build-up — production that holds up under audit
  • CAD and 3D printing for prototyping; formulation development with stability programs

Clinical & medical

  • Multi-center clinical investigations across Europe and Asia — CRO management, GCP monitoring
  • Clinical evaluations and PMCF that keep a device certified
  • Medical affairs — investigator-sponsored programs, advisory boards, KOL communication
  • Medical communication — shaping the clinical story, then carrying it through web and social channels, with review of marketing collateral and website content against the data
Track record

Built and run — not advised on.

Nearly two decades in senior industry roles, plus consulting and coaching mandates — every entry below was mine to deliver, with the accountability that came with it. Each is tagged with the milestone it belongs to.

Strategize

Regulatory pathway for new products

Set product classification and regulatory pathway at the front of new product development — for portfolio additions at mid-size manufacturers and for first products at start-ups — with the business case that had to hold up alongside it.

Class III implant — ideation to launch

Led the interdisciplinary NPD team through development of a Class III medical device: design control and risk management file, pre-clinical and clinical program, process validation, scale-up and supplier build-up — through to market.

Assure

QMS certification readiness

Set the quality plan, ran the gap analysis against the applicable laws and standards — ISO 13485, EU MDR, 21 CFR 820 — then implemented the system in the company: SOP landscape and templates restructured to the eQMS data model (Matrix Requirements / MatrixALM), design control and technical documentation built inside it. Brought to certification readiness, holding the management representative role with personal accountability.

Feasibility and NPV ahead of the go decision

Assessed product and project feasibility at the front of the stage-gate — technical route, regulatory exposure and NPV — for portfolio additions at mid-size manufacturers and first products at start-ups, so the go decision rested on numbers rather than conviction.

Supplier qualification, audits and monitoring

Selected and qualified critical suppliers, negotiated the quality and supply agreements behind them, then kept them under a planned audit cycle alongside internal audits — findings tracked to closure. Certified Lead Auditor for ISO 13485 and ISO 9001, external auditor to ISO 19011.

Independent reviewer on development projects

I have sat on both sides of the design review: leading the project team whose work was being judged, and later, as R&D head, monitoring progress across a portfolio and deciding what was ready to pass its stage gate. That is the qualification an independent reviewer needs — knowing what the evidence should look like, and what it costs the team to produce it.

The clinical story, from evidence to audience

Defined what the evidence actually supports and shaped it into a clinical story — then built the plan to carry it: webinars, white papers and consensus work with opinion leaders, dissemination through web and social channels, and review of marketing collateral and website content against the data.
